Dr MB’s RNA & DNA

Nucleic Acids

Humans–and all other living organisms–need nucleic acids. The nucleic acids, which include deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA, and ribonucleic acid, or RNA, encode genetic information and allow humans and other organisms to follow their genetic instructions. Nucleic acids also allow you to pass along your genetic information to your offspring.

DNA

DNA is the nucleic acid with which most people are familiar. Your cells contain DNA in their nuclei, and the DNA encodes genetic information that your cells use to make the structural and functional proteins that allow them to operate. When you produce new cells, old cells duplicate their genetic information, producing two identical sets of DNA. The cell then splits into two, each daughter cell getting a complete set of the genetic code.

RNA

DNA isn’t the only nucleic acid; you also depend upon RNA. RNA helps the cell make proteins from DNA, because DNA is sequestered in a cell’s nucleus, and the protein-making machinery in a cell is outside the nucleus. RNA transfers genetic information from inside the nucleus to outside, and also helps to read the genetic information and generate protein from it.

Transmitting Information

Yet another reason you need nucleic acid is so you can reproduce, passing your genetic information on to your children. Your eggs or sperm each contain half of your DNA. When you conceive a child, you combine half your DNA with half of your partner’s DNA, producing a fertilised egg with a full set of DNA. This fertilised egg contains all the genetic information necessary to produce a fully functional human.

Nucleotides perform a range of functions in your cells. One primary purpose of nucleotides is to store genetic information; specific sequences of nucleotides make up genes that help to guide your cells’ behaviour. In addition, the nucleotides in RNA contribute to multiple steps in protein generation within your cells. Since the proteins made partially as a result of nucleotides make up the structure and function of your cells, nucleotides prove important for maintaining cell and tissue health. An inability to generate new DNA and RNA, due to a lack of available nucleotides, can lead to tissue damage and disease.

Some of the main benefits

  1. Supporting Cell Repair and Growth: Nucleic acids are essential components of DNA and RNA, which play crucial roles in cell repair, growth, and regeneration. Some proponents claim that nucleic acid supplements can support these processes, potentially promoting overall cellular health.
  2. Boosting Energy Levels: Nucleic acids are involved in energy metabolism within cells. It is believed that supplementing with nucleic acids may help increase energy levels and combat fatigue, although scientific evidence supporting this claim is limited.
  3. Enhancing Athletic Performance: Athletes and fitness enthusiasts sometimes use nucleic acid supplements as it can improve endurance, strength, and recovery.
  4. Supporting Brain Function: Nucleic acids are essential for brain function and cognitive health. It is  suggested that nucleic acid supplements may support brain function and potentially improve memory and cognitive performance.
  5. Anti-Aging Properties: Nucleic acids are involved in the maintenance of skin, hair, and nails. Some individuals use nucleic acid supplements as it can promote youthful skin, strengthen hair and nails, and support overall anti-aging efforts.
  6. Immune System Support: Nucleic acids play a role in immune function, and it is believed that supplementing with nucleic acids can help support a healthy immune system.
