What Is Echinacea?

The Great Plains Indian tribes discovered and used Echinacea for over 400 years. They used various parts of the plant to make medicine. Before 1950, Echinacea had esteemed medicinal status, but antibiotics gained popularity.

Today, growing Echinacea, also called Echinacea purpurea or pale purple coneflower, is popular among gardeners. It has attractive daisy-like flowers on strong stems.

Interestingly, the plant’s root and upper parts have significant chemical differences. The root contains volatile oils, while above-ground parts have immune-triggering polysaccharides. Echinacea extract is made from the upper part.

Echinacea’s constituents, like essential oils, flavonoids, and vitamin C, boost immunity. The most effective part is above ground. In Germany, it’s approved for urinary tract infections, colds, and wound healing.

What Is Goldenseal?

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), also known as orange root, yellow root, or yellow puccoon, belongs to the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. It is a perennial herb that sprawls low and grows in the rich, shady soil of deciduous forests in North America, ranging from southern Quebec to northern Georgia and west to Missouri.

Nowadays, due to over-harvesting, goldenseal is predominantly grown commercially on farms in the U.S. The plant itself has stems covered in hair, with five to seven jagged, lobed leaves and small white flowers that transform into raspberry-like red berries. The roots of the plant, which have a bitter taste, are twisted, wrinkled, and brightly yellow or brown.

Teas, liquid extracts, tablets, capsules, and natural skin care products are made using the dried underground stems (rhizomes) and roots of the goldenseal plant. The potent properties of goldenseal primarily stem from the alkaloids berberine, canadine, and hydrastine. These phytochemical alkaloids exert a powerful astringent effect on mucous membranes, reduce inflammation that causes diseases, and possess antiseptic effects.
