5-HTP, short for (5-hydroxytryptophan), serves as a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter. Tryptophan converts into 5-HTP through tryptophan hydroxylase, and then 5-HTP converts into serotonin via L-amino acid decarboxylase. Supplements containing 5-HTP are known as Griffonia plant seed extract, Griffonia simplicifolia, or oxitriptan.
